Characteristic of disc brake

Comparing with drum brake, disc brake has the following advantages. There is no friction potential in general, so the brake efficiency is less affected by the friction coefficient, which means that the efficiency is more stable, the efficiency is less reduced after immersion, and it can be restored to normal only after one or two brakes. Under the same output braking moment, the size and the brake efficiency are less affected by the friction coefficient. The quality is generally small, the thermal expansion of the brake disc along the thickness direction is very small, and it will not increase the brake clearance as evidently as the thermal expansion of the brake drum, leading to the brake pedal travel too large. It is easier to realize the automatic adjustment of the clearance, and other maintenance and repair operations are also relatively simple. For the caliper disc brake, because the brake disc is exposed, it also has the advantage of good heat dissipation. The disadvantage of disc brake is its low efficiency, so when it is used in hydraulic brake system, the pressure of brake driving pipeline is higher, and servo device is usually used.

Disc brakes have been widely used in cars, but most of them are used only as front wheel brakes, except for all wheels on some high-performance cars. They are matched with drum brakes on rear wheels in order to improve the directional stability of automobiles when braking. Disc brake is also adopted on freight cars, but there is still a long way to go.
